Fake News Is No News
News is a part of our everyday lives. We hear news, we watch news, and we read them. But not all news is reliable. Therefore we must keep an eye open and check the sources and evidence that proves the news site to be authentic. In this blog I will talk about some examples of fake news I have seen going around recently.
Often however, I don't really analyze the information that I see on social media all that much. I do consider news sites such as Toronto star, Huffington post, CTV, CP24, CBC, Vice, and Vox. I don't see an advantage of using any of the above points, especially since the authors of those websites already seem to be bias and reliable sources to go to and already does it apply to all of the rules from the infographic, but whenever I use twitter I think that the infographic is vital, especially since twitter is something anybody can create or manipulate.
There is one example of fake news I have seen recently is fake photos of a famous rapper, Travis Scott shown cheating with another woman who isn't Kylie. This went viral, and caught many people off guard. The TMZ watermark led many to believe it was real, but in all actuality upon my further research, it turned out to be a "social experiment" to make a point of the climax on fake news on the internet.
This came a shock to Kylie's family, and Kim responded regarding to this issue in a tweet.
Kylie replied to the video with an instagram story.
Here is a video by the original creator of the photo explaining his reasoning behind the photo:
Nonetheless, I think this was a bad move. Instead of trying to make a statement, it proved to be a disaster. News outlets, celebrities, and TV channels were covering this topic. It really shows how one photo could ruin the reputation of a person, and how manipulative the internet can be.

I fully agree with this! Fake news has the potential to harm or destroy relationships, especially in this case with the Kylie and Travis, a couple with a child. Meaning that fake news could have destroyed a family. In addition to this, fake news has the potential to effect politics like it had with the 2016 election. If it had happen before, it can happen again but with even more massive political decisions. I agree with your statement that the internet can be a very manipulative place, and it makes ignorant minds vulnerable to being fooled into the wrong ideas or mindsets.
ReplyDeleteI heard about this on instagram and was quite shocked. It truly is amazing how things can be manipulated and created so that others become misled and believe something that is false. I think that the creator of that photo meant no harm to Kylie and Travis, but when it started blowing up he should have commented on it ASAP, rather than letting it go viral and damage their relationship.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! It is extremely insensitive to mess with another couple's relationship, especially one so public. Fake news can destroy people's lives and ruin reputations if we aren't able to identify if what we are reading is fake. Regardless of the creator's intentions, I'm sure there was another way to get the same point across without potentially ruining a relationship.
ReplyDeleteFake news is very misleading and is detrimental, especially to whom the story maybe about. In this case, it was about Travis Scott cheating. Him and Kylie just started a family, some people really don't know when they're overstepping the line. If a lot of damage was done Kylie and Travis could've filed a lawsuit for slander, rightfully so in this case. Fake news not only happens on social media, it happens at a political level as well. On the 3rd of June, there was a London attack, and CNN thought it would be a good idea to stage a protest, making a lot of people take protesters less seriously. I definitely do agree with your statement, the internet and the media could be very disingenuous, deceiving many and potentially mutilating one's reputation.
ReplyDeleteInstagram is highly infected with fake news but this one is truly disgusting. I am truly disgusted to what people do get attention for views and likes especially harming Kylie and Travis Scott's family. It created a huge impact with Kylie's family and fans. This is truly shocking to what people will do to ruin some people's relationship for attention.
